Things Mentally Healthy College Students Do-image

With college comes choices, with choices come consequences — good or bad. You’ll find out things you never knew about yourself and the world around you. It’s important that you make the most out of the education and experiences that surround you. It’s also imperative that you find ways to balance your life to stay mentally healthy while going through so many new and exciting changes. Here are a few tips on how to stay mentally healthy as a college student.   Sleep While mom is away, the kids will play. That means it’s up to you to develop healthy sleep patterns as you adapt into a high-functioning college student. You may think four hours of sleep is plenty to function properly, but your body says otherwise. Your memory becomes impaired, the body develops more fatigue, and you may even notice general sluggishness in your everyday routine. Are you adding regular partying to your college experience? Moderate your wild side to ensure your grades aren’t suffering alongside a failing liver.   Communicate Communication majors aren’t the only ones in need of constant communication. Develop regular contact with friends, study partners, professors, and roommates. Learn who people are so you can talk to the right person about different issues. You may even find yourself approaching wild roommates to keep down the noise to make sure you get enough rest for the big exam. If you’re having personal struggles, speak with your professor. They may extend a due date instead of having you fail the course. Generally, people are happy to work with you if you communicate in a friendly and open way.   Balance If you’re striving to be mentally healthy, remember there is a time to have fun and a time to study — make sure you make time for both. Your brain needs breaks, so take time to veg on the couch or hang with your friends. With only so many hours in a day, make sure to accomplish your necessary class work and studying before you lose track of the time.   Fuel Top Ramen can’t sustain you forever, Bubba. Consider what mama taught you and eat those healthy foods to properly fuel your college experience. A balanced diet will do wonders to a brain in need of a high attention span. Gobble your pizza and slurp the soda, but space out the binging to limit the strain on your mind and body. Include fruits, veggies, and nuts in your diet. A good rule of thumb, if everything on your plate is the same color, you’re probably not getting enough nutrients from your food.   Take advantage of the   top of the line kitchens   in Vintage at Tabernacle's student housing apartments to make sure you are fueled up all semester long.    Schedule Don’t procrastinate; get a planner. This could be a physical book or a planner app on your phone — use it. Most likely your teacher will hand out schedules at the beginning of the semester, but take the time to write down the big assignments or test days. When the teacher makes changes in class, jot down those changes in your planner. This will save you from missed assignments and forgotten tests.   College really can be a wonderful experience, but it only goes as far as you — and your body — allow it. Sure, the “Freshman 15” is a common saying for a reason, but if you prioritize your education and proper living habits, you’ll have a wonderful time and finish with a degree, a balanced experience, and new friends.

Staying Cool in St. George: Summer Ideas-image

Summer is upon us, and one important way to enjoy your time at Dixie State is by staying cool. In more ways than one, you can stave off the hot summer sun while enjoying everything Utah has to offer. From the many national parks the state is known for to local attractions, you can make the most of the season by taking in the sights, learning something new, and making memories that last. So what are you waiting for? Adventure awaits the explorer of the glorious Beehive State.   Visit a National Park Utah is the proud home of five national parks. They are all expansive and offer completely different experiences. And lucky for you, there are three of the most unique national parks in the US within a reasonable travel distance of Dixie State. There's so much to see and do at Arches, Zion, and Bryce National Parks. Whether you're a budding photographer, an amateur geologist, or want something cool for Insta, take time out of your student housing and elevate your game.   Arches inspiration Natural arches are an inspiring thing to see. No matter how many times you see them, they offer something stunning to behold. And if you like these, you will love Arches National Park. Named for them, the park is home to over 2,000 natural arch formations. Made from sandstone, you don't need to be a geology student to appreciate the stunning beauty of these red-hued behemoths. Devils Garden Campground offers basic amenities while enjoying your stay.   Scenic Zion National Park To the southwest of Utah lies Zion National Park, and it couldn't be more different than Arches. The scenic plains are fed by the many rivers that flow to Emerald Pools. As such, the park is rich in wildlife, making it a wonderful departure if you love wildlife. There's also a natural hanging garden formation littering the pool's surrounding waterfalls. You can contact the National Park Service for more information as you mull over taking the East Zion Horseback Ride Tour.   Bryce Canyon Similar to Arches, Bryce National Park in the south takes on a more crimson hue over the sandstone of its cousin to the east. But don't worry if you like strange rock formations, because Bryce has many of its own. The park has numerous canyons to observe. But also spired rock formations among a stunning amphitheater, sunrise and sunset spots, and hiking trails. And if you are feeling more adventurous, how about a trek to the Rainbow Point at around 9,000 feet?   Take in a show at the Tuacahn Located near Padre Canyon of Snow Canyon State Park, the Tuacahn is a premier performing arts center. The talented folks there put on dazzling shows, including the likes of Michael Jackson's “Thriller,” but in the open desert! Some of the upcoming shows include the following:   May 13 - Oct 19, 2023: Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  May 20 - Oct 21, 2023: Tarzan is on show. July 15 - Oct 20, 2023: The Hunchback of Notre Dame.  June 30 - Aug 19, 2023: Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.  Nov 24 - Dec 22, 2023: Irving Berlin's White Christmas the Musical.  Source:   Tuacahn.org   Also, unlike other theaters, the Tuacahn works with a more relaxed vibe, which is great for student life. The dress code is far more casual than typical experiences, and they even offer ShowCare services for children up to seven years old—great for when your siblings tag along.   Dig the Dinosaur Discovery Site Utah is one of the world's most active dinosaur dig sites. And Johnson Farm hosts a natural museum charting millions of years of dinosaur history. The collection there includes thousands of fossils and preserved dinosaur footprints. The museum also houses more than dinosaurs, including fish and paleolithic plants. For paleontology students, the sire also offers volunteer positions for expanding their knowledge, such as site greeters, tour guides, and fossil preppers.   Try Going for a Classic Swim Vintage at Tabernacle is among the best student housing in the United States. Included with your lodging is access to the large swimming pool, which is completely free for resident students. Summer is a time for getting out, but taking in the glorious Utah sun is one of the best ways to wind down and take your mind off your studies. Bask in the golden rays, then cool off in the soaking area that offers multiple-sized pools. Other additions include a gym and outdoor sports.   How About a Healthy Hike? Zion National Park is home to some stunning places, including Emerald Pools. But for something a bit more active, you can hike The Narrows with your college friends. This is a great experience for moderately experienced hikers—so be aware that it isn't for beginners. However, if you enjoy the challenge of a good hike, it will take you around thirteen hours to complete, including break times. You must also take good footwear to avoid slipping on the rocks of the rapid streams.   Take a Dip at Sand Hollow Reservoir Another national park you don't want to miss is Sand Hollow. The park alone is glorious and offers a unique mix of picturesque desert with lush rivers and streams. But atop the park at 3,000 feet above sea level is the Sand Hollow Reservoir. Boating and fishing are popular here. But many divers are attracted to the reservoir because there are many discoveries to be made in the 95-foot-deep pool. These include a Cessna aircraft, a "bomb" air tank, and even a toilet!   Your Experience at Vintage at Tabernacle As a student of Dixie State, you are in the fortunate position of being surrounded by some of the most exciting places in the United States. There are three national parks within travel distance; Arches, Zion and Bryce. Yet other national parks such as Snow Canyon and Sand Hollow offer unique and fun experiences like outdoor theater and diving for strange treasures. But, of course, you can simply enjoy the   amenities   of the student housing that   Vintage at Tabernacle   offers.

Tips for a Safe First Date-image

College is one of the best times in your life to meet new and exciting people. New classes and new friend groups provide ample opportunity to extend your friend and dating pool. It’s important to not get too carried away with the excitement of it all that you forget about your own safety. Here are five tips to keep in mind to make sure you stay safe while having new experiences.    Public If you’re meeting someone new for the first time, make sure you pick a public location. This way there will be people around you that you could reach out to if you started feeling uncomfortable or unsafe. Also, if the person you are meeting suggests that you move to a more private location, tell them that you’d like to save that for another time when you’ve gotten to know them a bit better. If this offends or bothers them, then they might not be right for you.    Groups It’s never a bad idea to meet new people while in a group of friends. If there is someone that you’ve been chatting with online and you’re thinking you might be ready to meet them in person, you could invite them over for a game night or another group activity with some of your friends or roommates. This also provides an opportunity for the people you know to help vet the newcomer.   And if you're look for a fun group date idea, try having a game night in your   student housing complex's clubhouse   or go to a resident event!   Tell A Friend If you’ve decided on a one on one meet up with a new person, make sure you tell someone what your plans are. Let a roommate or friend know the name of the person you are meeting and about when you think you’ll be coming home. It’s even a good idea to share with them the activity you’ll be doing so they’ll know if they need to keep an eye on their phone just in case you need to send a “help” text.   Bring Money Even if the person you’re meeting up with has offered to pay for your evening out, always bring a bit of money with you. If something were to happen, then you wouldn’t be left stranded. Bring enough money that you’d be able to pay for your meal and grab an Uber home if you needed to.    Charge Your Phone In today’s world it’s important to be able to communicate with people via your phone. It isn’t polite to be on your phone while you are on a date, but it is smart to have your phone with you and fully charged. If something happens that makes you uncomfortable on the date, you’ll be able to phone a friend in the bathroom for an excuse to leave early or make a quick escape plan.   It is exhilarating to meet up with new people and learn more about the world around you, just remember to be smart. There is no reason to place yourself in a potentially dangerous situation. Communicate with the people around you and you should be able to have a safe and fun time while you're out at college.

How to Get Enough Sleep in College-image

Sleep is an important part of your everyday life. When you don’t get enough sleep, it is hard to function normally. Getting enough sleep is important to feeling awake and alert during the day, maintaining your health, and doing your best work. As a college student, you may feel like you don’t have time to sleep or that getting to sleep is hard. By making sure you do get enough sleep, you are increasing how productive and healthy you are being.   Have a consistent sleep schedule. You should plan to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. If your first class is at 8 am and you need to be up by 6:30 am to be on time, then you should plan to wake up at 6:30 every day of the week. Most adults need 8 hours of sleep every day so in this case, you should be going to bed at 10:30 pm.   Make plans for your normal awake time. If you normally sleep from 11 pm-7 am, don’t make plans during that time. You should take classes at times that won’t force you to wake up earlier than your sleep schedule. When you go out with friends, or on dates, you should always plan to be home in time to get ready for bed and to be in bed at your regular time.   Turn off electronics an hour before bed. The blue light from your phone and computer signals your brain that it is daytime. This prevents your body from producing hormones that help you sleep and makes falling asleep more difficult. Try reading a physical book or doing something else before bed instead.   Use the hour before bed to do a relaxing activity. You can use this time to meditate, take a bath, write in a journal, etc. De-stressing can make falling asleep easier, and help you not only get more sleep but better sleep. Everyone needs some time in their day to relax and focus on themselves.   Wear comfortable pajamas. Wearing comfortable, seasonal pajamas will help you get better quality of sleep. Pajamas can help you maintain the right body temperature while you sleep and keep you from waking up due to discomfort.   Use ambient noise. A fan or a white noise machine are great options for ambient noise. Ambient noise can help you fall asleep and stay asleep. If you have noise going in your room already, then it might be harder for you to hear your roommate opening the bathroom door or stepping on that squeaky floorboard while you are sleeping.   Put up blackout curtains. Blackout curtains will help with the light from the sun coming up before it is time to wake up or from headlights shining through your windows at the worst times. This can keep all of the light out of your room at any time of the day.   Try using these guidelines to get better sleep this semester and for the rest of college. Your grades and health will thank you!   If you're a Vintage at Tabernacle tenant and are having trouble sleeping due to noises in or outside   of the apartment, don't hesitate to give management a call   to see how we can help!
